Life Is Not A Competition With Others

Life is not a competition against others. Unfortunately, too many people don’t realize that and spend all their time comparing their situation to everybody else’s. Life’s only competition is internal. A little while ago I wrote that success is a race, but it’s a marathon not a sprint. Today I want to discuss  why

Life Is Not A Competition With Others

Life is not a competition against other people. The only real competition is with ourselves. We have to overcome and defeat our own internal doubts, insecurities, and deficiencies. The battle is totally internal. Unfortunately, too many people don’t realize this.

There are entirely too many people in this world who are comparing their progress to everybody else. It’s like they’re trying to beat everyone else to the finish line. But, everybody’s journey is different, and the problem arises when they start to fall a little behind those around them. Their competition with everyone else only serves to add another obstacle to their path, and it can cause them to lose focus on the ultimate outcome. C Smith Sumner said it best:

Life is not a competition with others. In its truest sense it is rivalry with ourselves.  We should each day set to break the record of our yesterday.  We should seek each day to live stronger better truer lives; each day to master some weakness yesterday

Once we learn the only important battle is within, huge strides can be made along the path towards success. We must overcome our personal enemy within.  Once we do, we can dedicate our efforts to improving ourselves by learning new skills and expanding our horizons. We can focus on our personal development and growth, and develop into the leader we need to be to be successful. It’s internal and it’s up to us individually.

Don’t compare yourself or compete with others. Everyone has their own individual journey they must take. Some will be shorter than others and some will be easier than others, but the important things is to take the journey and get there. The end reward is well worth whatever journey you must endure. See you in the winner’s circle. Until next time…

Love the new theme Barry! Very nice and I’m so happy you like it. I sure do.

Aren’t we all just fighting with ourselves. We think it’s a competition at times but unless people come to terms with what’s holding themselves back, they’ll never move forward.

We shouldn’t even be thinking that we’re competing against other people because there’s enough room for us all here. The sooner we all understand that, the better off we’ll all be.

      Hi Adrienne!

I’m glad you like the new look! I really do think it looks better than it did before, and NO CAPTCHA!! :-) I finally got aggravated with the captcha complaints and realized that I was getting nowhere with the theme programmer when he put out 4 updates and NONE of them addressed the capthca, so I moved on!

Anyways, I totally agree with you. There really is no sense in competing with everyone else. Everybody has different circumstances, different skills and experiences, and different motivations. We all bring something different to the table, but all of these differences cause our journeys to have different time tables. We can all get there as long as we stay consistent and persistent, and there is plenty of room at the end of the rainbow. Unfortunately, there’s even more room there because most won’t stick it out. So many people miss out on some amazing accomplishments and unbelievable things because they stopped 3 feet short of the finish line simply because they didn’t realize how truly close they were. I LOVE Jim Rohn’s thinking on this issue. “How long should I try? Until!” Awesome!

It was great to see you back, Adrienne. Hopefully you’ll visit a little more often now that I’ve gotten rid of that awful captcha! I hope you have a truly outstanding week!

    Hi Barry,
Great subject! I find that when people are in competition with others, they are at a standstill. It is difficult enough to work on ourselves. Why bother to look at what someone else is doing. I have had clients that had that mindset and had to work real hard to get through to them that they need to zone into them selves.
Once we do we can overcome that enemy within ourselves. I can personally say that I’m still at it. It is that enemy within that I call the “critic” and it is always there from years ago. Through NLP and DBT, I have won many battles by these techniques.
You are certainly on target here and am excited to hear more about it.
    Blessings,

      Hi Donna!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and taking the time to comment! Your time and opinion are valued!

You’re absolutely right, when people spend time focusing on their competition they totally lose focus on their overall objective. They eventually get so far off track that they may never find their original path again. The sad part is, there’s plenty of room at the top for anyone willing to put forth the effort to get there. Instead of focusing on beating others, we should instead do everything we can to help them get there, even if they get there first. It’s a much more fulfilling feeling and will ultimately lead to great reward for us, too!

As you mentioned, there is certainly enough fight involved with overcoming internal issues to have ANY energy left to compete with others. And, our personal internal battle is much more important anyways.

Thanks again for stopping by. I hope you have an outstanding week, and I hope to see you by here again soon!
